Momma’s Monday Memo: Rest Is Not a Reward — It’s a Requirement

Hey momma—before you push through this Monday, grab your caffeine and come seat with me for a minute.
If you’ve been telling yourself you’ll rest after everything is done––girl, same––but maybe there’s a less demanding way. One that cradles you instead of kicking you.  Let’s talk.

Why Moms Struggle to Rest Without Guilt

There is always something to do.
Always something to clean, cook, fix, find or tend to.

And here’s the truth: the list never ends.

That pressure alone can feel soul––crushing.
No matter how quick we finish, no matter how much we do, our work is never really “done”.

And that’s fucking exhausting.

Somewhere along the way, rest became something moms feel they have to earn.
Take care of everyone else first.
Clean everything.
Finish the list.
Then—maybe—you can sit down.

But waiting to rest until everything is done means you’ll always be exhausted… because everything is never done.

Where the Guilt Comes From

Before becoming a mom, I don’t remember a single time I felt guilt for sitting down.
We weren’t born feeling like we had to earn the right to sit down.
Apparently that’s one of those peachy motherhood blessings.

Everywhere we look exhaustion is masked as hustle culture –– especially for moms.
Be the maid.
The caretaker.
The cook.
The teacher.
The partner.
If you can’t do it all, and do it social media perfect, you’re failing.
Or at least that’s what it feels like.

So when your body is begging for a break, it can feels wrong, or even weak.

But rest is your bodies requirement
and that guilt you feel?
It isn’t truth. It’s conditioning.

Let’s Say the Quiet Part Out Loud

Rest isn’t lazy.
Rest isn’t quitting.
Rest isn’t something you need permission for.

Your body asking you to slow down isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.

You deserve rest, even if the house is a mess.
You deserve rest even if the soundtrack of your day is “mom, mom, momma, mom”

Even superheroes have to take off the cape sometimes.

Let’s Reframe This Gently

When the kids are babies, we’re told to rest, when the baby sleeps.
When the kids are older, we’re told to rest after bedtime.
But what happens if we can’t wait till then?

Let’s be practical instead.

Sometimes rest looks like:

  • sitting instead of standing
  • saying no (gentle reminder, no is a full sentence)
  • leaving something unfinished

Rest for moms doesn’t have to be dramatic or aesthetic or perfectly planned.
But it is required

A Note to Carry Into This Week

You don’t have to earn rest.
You’re allowed to need it.
Rest is a requirement for everyone.

Rest is not lazy.
Set the load down. Have a seat. Take a breath.
The world will keep turning––I promise.

Take care of yourself, Momma.
Until next week––
I see you. I love you. I’m proud of you.

XO,
Sam
